Surf Camps

Surf Camps and surf instruction are the essence of our being at Sebastian Inlet Surf & Sport. We are very fortunate to have a beautiful plot of land just across the street from the ocean just two miles north of Florida's most famous wave, Sebastian Inlet's First Peak. The space we have allows us to have a comprehensive curriculum for camps and lessons. We incorporate balance and strength training, wave science tutorials, wave etiquette and other basics of the sport along with the obvious in-water activity to usher our campers into the surfing life. Not to mention, we do our best to make it SERIOUSLY FUN!

With 2023's Spring Break Camps soon to be behind us, we're looking ahead to another great summer of ten Summer Surf Camps. Also on the bill are our June and September Chica Weekends.

 Summer Surf Camps

It's time to get your crew ready for the Sebastian Inlet Summer Surf Camp Experience!

Beginning on June 5, we kick off ten straight weeks of camps, all targeting our goal of BUILDING STRONGER SURFERS. With an age range from 6-17, we invite all ability levels from absolute novices to young surfers with quite a bit of experience. All camps run from Monday-Friday 9am-1pm.

We happen to think we offer surf camp like no other.

What makes the difference? That's an easy one: location, location, location! Most surf camps are in crowded spots like Cocoa Beach, Indialantic or Fort Pierce, while we are in the relative seclusion of the Sebastian Inlet area, which just happens to be the most famous surf destination in Florida. When our campers walk across the street to the beach, they're usually the only surfers in sight. It's like our private little surfer slice of paradise.

Even better, where most surf camps head straight to the beach and pray for waves, we have our own Inlet Oaks Train Station, a unique outdoor training facility behind the shop where we do balance & strength training and maybe even run some really fun obstacle course relay races. We also have indoor and outdoor shaded areas to escape the Florida summer sun while campers eat lunch, get rehydrated and have a blast playing foosball or pinball.

Even more important is our seriously fun approach to teaching surfing. We want our campers not only to learn to surf, but to learn about surfing. Somehow, we manage to make it fun to learn about Newton's First Law, the difference between local wind swell and ground swell, and what the heck fetch and period are and how that affects the size and quality of the waves you surf.

But above all, our campers spend a lot of time in the water and catch a lot of waves under the guidance of instructors who get just as excited as the kids every time somebody rides a great wave. We absolutely live the Surfing Life and love to share the stoke with the next generation ... your kids!

Lessons of A Surfing Life Packed Into a Week's Camp

Back when we were learning to surf, there were few, if any, true surf instructors, so it was all a matter of figuring it out ... which could take decades as you traveled the world and surfed ever more challenging waves. So it just made sense to us to pack over a combined seventy years of surf experience into a curriculum that will give our campers a head start.

The most versatile member of our coaching staff is a true Florida surfer girl, Sophia Pickett (a.k.a. SoPhlow). Sophia grew up in Wabasso, just nine miles south of the shop. Sophia brings a wealth of experience and personality to our team. In addition to her surfing skill, Sophia is also a certified yoga instructor as well as a certified massage therapist and practices those skills in her own studio, Sophlow Yoga in Sebastian, right across the Indian River Lagoon from the shop. In short, Sophia totally lives the surfing life ... and loves to share her experience with our campers.

Working under Sophia are a great group of instructors. We're very proud that many of them came up through the ranks here at the shop, starting out as campers themselves, 'graduating' to intern spots and then becoming instructors. They're not here for a 'summer job'; they're here because they love surfing and passing on their stoke to a new generation.

Shop owner John Robson also has a teaching and coaching background and has had the good fortune to surf legendary spots around the world ranging from Puerto Escondido, Mexico; Mundaka, Spain & Byron Bay, Australia to numerous locales in the Caribbean, Europe and Central America.
