Get ready for Chica Weekend!

Chica Weekend is the ultimate opportunity for women who want to learn to surf and those who already have surfing experience to come together for a great weekend that involves a whole lot more than just surfing.  By the end of Chica Weekend, campers also will have experienced sessions in balance and strength training, yoga, aerial yoga, nutrition and wave science. Not to mention a Saturday night fire pit dinner with live music from Sebastian's Alesandra Valenzuela and an authentic Sunday morning Costa Rican-style brunch.  This year's first Chica Weekend is scheduled on a particularly auspicious weekend as June 21 is the official first day of summer and June 22 is International Surfing Day!

At the helm of the camp is long time Indian River County middle school math teacher ”Miss Amy’ Houseknecht. With a 20-plus year surfing career and loads of experience teaching younger surfers, Miss Amy can’t wait for the next round of teaching women. “Oh my gosh,” she says, “Our ‘chicas’ are going to learn so much and have so much fun!“

The camp curriculum isn’t limited to surfing, but also includes a wide range of related activities that are key to successful surfing. Amy and co-instructor Sophia Pickett along with guest strength coach Theona O'Brian will lead clinics in balance and strength training while Healing Touch’s Michel Quintana will lead classes in traditional yoga and the beautifully inspiring (and challenging!) practice of aerial yoga. All four are themselves veteran surfers with a thorough understanding of how their specialties impact better surfing.

What You Need To Bring

Basically, just prepare for a day at the beach! 

  • Swim wear
  • Sun protection (rash guard and/or sunscreen)
  • Yoga gear, if you have it (mat & appropriate clothing)
  • Towel
  • Water bottles (we have plenty of water)

What We Provide

  • Soft top surfboards (by all means, bring your own board if you have one)
  • Welcome snacks & juices on Saturday
  • Saturday night dinner with fire pit and live music
  • Smoothies and juices Sunday morning
  • Costa Rican style brunch Sunday
  • Aerial yoga slings
  • Great instructors!

Tentative Camp Schedule


11:30 – Welcome reception … fresh juices & snacks on the front porch as you get to know your instructors and fellow campers

12:45 – Strength training & balance training with Amy& Sophia

2:00 – Wave Science at the beach

2:20 – Pop-up drills

2:45 – Surf session for all

4:30 – Return to shop to rinse off and dress

5:15 – Mini-Clinics … jewelry making, cool coconut-based creations,  wellness concepts, etc.,

6:15 – Cocktail hour with tabletop displays

7:00 – Fire pit/Dinner/Live Music

9:00 – End of day



7:15– Smoothies, fruit & Home Made energy bars

8 a.m.  – Beach yoga with Michel Quintana

9 a.m. – Surf Session/Aerial Yoga (half & half)

11 a.m. – Aerial Yoga/Surf Session (half & half)

12:30 – Costa Rican-style brunch

1:30 – Last Surf Session (for all)

3:00 – End of paradise/return to reality!
