Get ready for Chica Weekend #3 -- June 18/19
There's nothing quite like celebrating the official beginning of summer AND International Surfing Day with an awesome Chica Weekend. It's the ultimate opportunity for women who want to learn to surf and those who already have surfing experience to come together for a great weekend that involves a whole lot more than just surfing. By the end of Chica Weekend, campers also will have experienced sessions in balance and strength training, yoga, nutrition, wave science and quite possibly, tai chi. Not to mention a Saturday night fire pit dinner with live music and an authentic Sunday afternoon Costa Rican-style brunch.
At the helm of the camps are the dynamic duo of Amy Houseknecht and Sophia Pickett. "Miss Amy" is long time math teacher at Gifford Middle School who recently migrated to Pennsylvania. But Amy loves Chica Weekend so much that she's flying back south to continue her role of co-Head Chica. Before she gets here, we expect her to take on the challenge of river rapids surfing in PA ... helmet and soft top surfboard strongly suggested. With a 20-plus year surfing career and loads of experience teaching younger surfers, Amy loves the opportunity of welcoming women into the world of surfing. “Oh my gosh,” she says, “Our ‘chicas’ are going to learn so much and have so much fun!“
Ironically, Sophia was once Amy's student at Gifford and has lived a total "surfer girl" life, growing up just a few miles south of the shop in Wabasso and surfing basically all her life. Now a certified yoga instructor and massage therapist, she owns Sophlow Yoga in Sebastian, Florida and is one great surf instructor. Together, Amy and Sophia are full of personality and make Chica Weekends a ton of fun. Sophia's next great adventure will be a two week visit with family in Sweden, just before Chica Weekend, so we can expect her to be rip-roaring ready to get back in Our warm water.
The camp curriculum isn’t limited to surfing, but also includes a wide range of related activities that are key to successful surfing. Amy and Sophia along with guest coaches will lead clinics in balance, strength training and yoga All instructors are themselves veteran surfers with a thorough understanding of how their specialties impact better surfing.
